Terrapieno, in Verona, is a collaboration between friends who have worked together for over 20 years. Matt Thomson of Blank Canvas makes the wines, while Luca Degani of Cantina Valpantena and Gaetano Tobin of Cantina Monteforte provide the grapes from some of their best vineyards. Sadly, Gaetano passed away in 2021 and Head Winemaker Alessandro Doná is now in charge of production. Alessandro worked with Gaetano for over ten years and ensures that his legacy and unshakeable commitment to quality live on.
Terrapieno means ‘full earth’ and references a construction method previously used in northeast Italy, using an accumulation of earth to reinforce walls and fortifications. The Castello di Montorio in the Valpantena is a fine example of this method. The ‘terrapieno’ also contained a store for food reserves in case of sieges, in which wine would also be held. Matt, Luca and Gaetano often met over food and wine, so the name is very appropriate.
Terrapieno Valpolicella Ripasso is characterized by a deep ruby-red color with garnet reflections. The bouquet is rich and inviting, offering aromas of ripe cherries, blackberries, and plums, interwoven with hints of vanilla, chocolate, and spice. On the palate, the wine delivers a harmonious balance of fruit, acidity, and tannins, with a lingering, smooth finish that showcases its refined elegance.
A perfect match for grilled or roasted meats, aged cheeses and tomato-based pasta dishes. Nothing better than a slow cooked Bolognese.
