Jean-Marc Sélèque is a rising star in the world of Champagne, crafting exquisite, terroir-driven wines that highlight the purity and complexity of his vineyards. His Solessence Extra Brut Champagne NV is a stunning representation of his winemaking philosophy, blending precision, elegance, and authenticity in every bottle.
Jean-Marc Sélèque took over his family’s estate in Pierry, near Épernay, and has since elevated it into a benchmark for sustainable viticulture and minimal-intervention winemaking. The estate was founded in the 1960s by his grandparents, and Jean-Marc, after studying oenology and gaining experience in various wine regions, returned in 2008 to modernize and refine the family’s winemaking approach. He employs organic and biodynamic practices, allowing each cuvée to express its unique terroir. Over the years, his wines have gained international recognition, winning awards such as high ratings from Wine Spectator and Decanter’s prestigious accolades.
The Solessence Extra Brut NV is a sophisticated blend of 50% Chardonnay, 40% Meunier, and 10% Pinot Noir, sourced from seven villages across the Vallée de la Marne and the Coteaux Sud d’Épernay. The grapes are meticulously hand-harvested and vinified with a mix of stainless steel and oak barrels, adding depth and complexity to the final wine. A portion of the base wine undergoes malolactic fermentation, contributing to its creamy texture while maintaining its vibrant acidity. The wine is aged on its lees for an extended period before disgorgement, further enhancing its richness and aromatic profile. The dosage is kept low (around 2-3 g/L), classifying it as an Extra Brut, which accentuates its minerality and precision.
Solessence Extra Brut showcases a brilliant pale gold hue with a fine and persistent mousse, reflecting its high-quality craftsmanship. The aromatic profile is inviting and complex, offering notes of crisp apple, pear, citrus zest, and white flowers, alongside subtle hints of brioche, toasted almonds, and wet stones.
On the palate, the champagne is vibrant and well-balanced, with a lively mousse that enhances its elegance. Flavours of lemon curd, ripe orchard fruits, and a touch of hazelnut unfold, leading to a refreshing minerality and a long, precise finish. The low dosage ensures a dry, crisp experience, making it an excellent choice for lovers of refined, terroir-driven Champagne.
A fantastic pairing with various dishes. It complements fresh oysters or seafood platters, sushi and sashimi, and light poultry dishes with citrus-based sauces. It also pairs beautifully with aged cheeses like Comté or Parmesan and enhances truffle-infused dishes for an elevated pairing experience.
