Founded in 1993 by acclaimed New Zealand actor Sam Neill, Two Paddocks has become one of Central Otago’s most celebrated wineries, producing small quantities of organically grown wines that reflect the region’s remarkable landscapes. The Picnic Riesling is a long-standing favourite, crafted from the Red Bank Vineyard in Alexandra and named in honour of Sam Neill’s grandfather, Sydney Neill, a wine merchant whose image appears on the label. Designed to be approachable, vibrant and effortlessly enjoyable, it offers a fresh introduction to the distinctive character of Central Otago Riesling.

Best known for his roles in Jurassic Park, The Piano and Peaky Blinders, Sam Neill has spent more than three decades developing Two Paddocks into one of New Zealand’s benchmark producers. His commitment to organic viticulture and careful stewardship of the land is evident throughout the estate, where quality and sustainability remain at the heart of every bottle.

Winemaker Dean Shaw takes a gentle, hands-on approach, with all fruit harvested by hand before a period of skin contact to enhance aromatics and texture. Fermentation is carefully managed to retain the wine’s lively fruit while leaving a touch of natural sweetness, before resting on its lees to add depth and complexity. The result is an elegant off-dry Riesling with remarkable freshness and balance.

This is a Riesling that dazzles with energy rather than intensity. Fragrant notes of lime blossom, jasmine and pink grapefruit drift from the glass, followed by crisp green apple, ripe citrus and a delicate hint of spice. A gentle touch of sweetness softens the vibrant acidity, creating a wine that feels weightless yet wonderfully persistent. The finish is mouth-watering, mineral and incredibly refreshing, inviting another sip from the very first glass.
