Zelna Farkó-kő Kékfrankos

Hungary’s Lake Balaton region is widely celebrated for its fresh, crisp white wines, but it’s also home to some remarkable reds. Among these is the Zelna Farkó-kő Kékfrankos, a wine that offers a bold yet balanced expression of this Austrian-origin grape, made with care and precision by the up-and-coming Zelna Winery. Known for their commitment to quality and sustainability, Zelna is quickly gaining recognition for their unique approach to winemaking, and their Kékfrankos is a testament to the potential of red wines in the Balaton region.

In the Balaton region, the grape thrives in the volcanic soils and under the moderating influence of Lake Balaton, Central Europe’s largest freshwater lake. The combination of the lake’s reflective light, the warm microclimate, and mineral-rich soils imparts a unique character to the wines.  The Kékfrankos grape is one of Hungary’s most cherished red wine grapes and benefits from long, warm summers and the cooling influence of the lake. These conditions allow the grapes to develop full ripeness while maintaining the acidity that is crucial for producing well-structured, age-worthy wines.

The grapes are hand-harvested and after two months of aging in tanks, it was poured into Hungarian oak barrels and left to form for a full year.

The use of oak is carefully balanced to add subtle spice and a smooth texture without overwhelming the natural flavours of the grape. The result is a wine that is both approachable in its youth and capable of aging gracefully over several years.

Ruby red colour and crunchy cherries on the nose. The limestone soil has had a definite impact on this versatile variety. The vibrant acidity on the palate, the unforgettable fruitiness and the special, salty-mineral duality of the Farkó-kő vineyard.

The wine’s bright acidity and medium body make it an excellent match for grilled meats, especially lamb or pork, and it shines when paired with Hungarian dishes like pörkölt (a traditional meat stew) or lángos (a deep-fried flatbread topped with sour cream and cheese).

For a lighter pairing, consider roasted vegetables, mushroom-based dishes, or even a hearty pasta with a tomato-based sauce. The wine’s fruit-forward nature and subtle spice notes make it a great companion to both savory and slightly spiced cuisine.
