Villa Raiano Greco di Tufo

Villa Raiano has firmly established itself as one of the finest producers of Greco, a white grape variety believed to have originated in Greece. Known for its taut, mineral character and concentrated style, Greco is one of Italy’s premier white varieties, particularly in the hands of the Raiano family. This wine, made from grapes sourced from vineyards in Montefusco, Tufo, and Altavilla Irpina, showcases the unique expression of this variety, cultivated at 500 meters above sea level in loose chalky and sandy soils.

Villa Raiano is committed to sustainable practices, with 80% of their fruit sourced from their own organically farmed vineyards across three prestigious DOCGs. The estate’s vineyards are located in Campania, nestled in the Southern Apennines, where they benefit from cooler mountain temperatures and a natural environment. In addition to organic viticulture, Villa Raiano has implemented several sustainability initiatives, including switching to lighter bottles and using gravity to move wine from tank to tank—reducing the need for energy-intensive pumps. Although the estate has not yet pursued official organic certification for the winery, the Raiano family’s dedication to both organic farming and sustainability is evident throughout their operations.

The vineyards are managed using the guyot system, and after harvesting the whole bunches in early October, the grapes are softly pressed. Fermentation and refinement occur in stainless steel tanks, with the wine spending 3–4 months on lees to enhance texture and depth.

The result is a wine that combines delicacy with intensity, revealing aromas of white flowers, anise, and citrus. On the palate, it’s broad and pithy with a chalky minerality that is perfectly balanced by pear, grapefruit, and subtle white spice notes. The finish is long and mouthwatering, with a saline bite that invites another sip.

This Greco is a perfect match for dishes such as lentil and prawn soup; baked turbot with potatoes; fish soup, artichoke risotto; seared tuna; fried octopus; and cod “alla pertecaregna”.
