Varzea Branco

Casa de Vila Nova is owned by the Lencastre family, of aristocratic Portuguese lineage and the estate is near the town of Penafiel, close to the eastern border of Portugal’s Vinho Verde wine region. Here, in the Entre-Douro-e-Minho sub-region of Sousa, their vineyards are influenced by winds from the Atlantic Ocean – creating the perfect climate to ripen indigenous Portuguese varieties

The Gouveio, Viosinho and Arinto grapes, indigenous to the north of Portugal, grow in fine soils with some schist. The vineyards are situated near Cambres, in the western part of the Douro valley, south of the river. Some of the vines are over 50 years old, and they enjoy a warm and dry climate. After harvesting the grapes are fermented in stainless steel at controlled temperatures.

On the nose, aromas of melon and white peach with floral hints. Stone fruit, apple and lemon peel characters on the palate – there is no use of oak or malolactic but the wine has an appealing creamy texture and refreshing finish.

Barão da Várzea do Douro Colheita Branco is a highly versatile wine that pairs well with a wide range of dishes. Its fresh, lively character makes it a perfect match for seafood, whether grilled fish or delicate shellfish like prawns and oysters. It also complements light salads, goat cheese, and vegetable dishes such as roasted asparagus or a Mediterranean vegetable tian. For something heartier, try it with white meats like roast chicken or turkey, where the wine’s crisp acidity helps balance the richness of the dish.
