Winemaker Giuseppe Losapio founded Azienda Uggiano in the early 1970s, and steadily developed the estate at San Vincenzo a Torri. It is now one of the leading producers in the Chianti Colli Fiorentini zone. With 100 hectares of hillside vineyards (in both Colli Fiorentini and around neighbouring Chianti Classico, near San Casciano), Uggiano produces classic and classy Tuscan reds from the region’s principal grape varieties. A core of quality runs through an unfussy, practical and exceptionally well-priced range, from bright entry level Chianti to some impressive Riserva wines.
Grapes are sourced from the oldest vines on Uggiano’s Colli Fiorentini and Classico properties. After crushing, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel with selected yeasts. The must is pumped over the skins twice a day. After 10-15 days the wine is racked to French oak barriques (Allier, Nevers and Vosges) where it matures for around 12 months. Then it spends a further 6-8 months ageing in large oak casks (30-60 hl), with at least 12 months refinement in bottle before release.
The Uggiano Fagiano Riserva is crafted from a blend of Sangiovese (90%) and Canaiolo (10%), a traditional combination in Chianti wines. Sangiovese forms the core of the wine, offering bright red fruit flavors, lively acidity, and structured tannins. Canaiolo, a lesser-known but essential grape in Tuscany, softens the blend with its gentle tannins and adds subtle earthy and floral notes, rounding out the wine’s profile
On the nose, warm, rich aromas of black cherry, dried fruits, spice and lightly balsamic notes. Richly flavoured and generous on the palate – with spicy, meaty notes balancing plum characters, fresh cherry acidity and lightly herbal characters. A well structured and integrated wine with great concentration and complexity.
Uggiano Fagiano Riserva pairs beautifully with classic Italian dishes, especially pasta with tomato-based sauces like spaghetti Bolognese or lasagna. It’s equally at home alongside roasted meats, grilled lamb, or game, where its structure and earthy tones really come to life. For a cheese pairing, reach for Pecorino or aged Parmigiano-Reggiano to bring out the wine’s depth and complexity.
