Founded in Haro in 1882 by Felipe Ugalde, one of the founding members of the Rioja D.O.C.
The grapes for this wine come from an old vineyard of over 50 years of age situated on the slopes of the Sierra de Cantabria, as well as from a 15-year-old one placed within the estate. The work on the vineyards has been specifically focused on achieving a healthy fruit with a total phenolic ripeness. Malolactic Fermentation in stainless-steel tanks occurs before two years American oak barrel ageing is used, with 5% of the wine in French oak, followed by a minimum of twelve months bottle ageing prior to release
A blend of traditional Rioja grape varieties, Tempranillo (85%), Graciano (10%) & Mazuelo (5%)
Clean and bright cherry red. On the nose, intense fruit is accompanied by toasted aromas, toffee and vanilla. On the palate, it is full, velvety and well balanced.
Ugalde Rioja Reserva 2018 pairs beautifully with a range of flavourful dishes. Its rich profile complements grilled meats such as lamb, beef, or game, while its complexity enhances the experience of aged cheeses like Manchego or Gouda. The wine also stands up well to rich dishes like stews or braised meats, where its depth and structure provide balance. Additionally, tapas and Spanish charcuterie, including chorizo or jamón ibérico, make excellent companions, allowing the wine’s aromatic notes to shine through.
