Muga is arguably the most traditional bodega in Rioja, based in the heart of Old Haro, and there is not a stainless-steel tank in sight. They even have their own cooper to give their barrels the perfect amount of toasting.
This Rioja really is the real deal. Only the best fruit picked at peak ripeness are left to ferment naturally in oak vats using indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels. The finishing product is a wine of enormous elegance and depth of flavour. On the nose you find ripe black fruit aromas, spicy black pepper and wood-land herbs. Balsamic appears with rosemary and some smoky notes from the ageing in top class oak casks. On the palate you can find the juicy, elegant tannins with a nice sharp acidity to create balance. Hints of liquorice and the pepper return. A very persistent, elegant, enjoyable and approachable wine.
