Sileni Estates, based near Hastings in Hawke’s Bay—New Zealand’s oldest wine region—was founded in 1997 by Graeme Avery, alongside Chris Cowper and winemaker Grant Edmonds. Named after the Sileni of Greek mythology—companions of Dionysus, god of wine—the estate celebrates the trinity of good wine, food, and company. Focused on crafting fine, fruit-driven wines for the international market, Sileni’s portfolio includes regional classics like Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.
The Triangle Merlot is grown in the Bridge Pa Triangle region of Hawke’s Bay, where warm temperatures and well-draining red gravel soils create ideal conditions for Merlot grapes. Following fermentation, the wine stayed on the skins for several weeks before pressing. It then underwent malolactic fermentation and was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, which helps develop its complexity and smoothness.
Sileni Estates has been SWNZ-certified since 2002, using sheep for natural weed control and adopting low-impact farming practices. In the winery, minimal intervention is paired with ongoing efforts to reduce water, energy, and waste. Packaging uses lightweight recycled glass and low-ink recyclable cartons, while native planting and stream restoration enhance biodiversity and ecosystem health.
The Triangle Merlot offers rich, ripe flavours of plum, dark berry, and liquorice, with subtle notes of dark chocolate on the finish. Soft, velvety tannins give structure to this full-bodied wine, which has excellent ageing potential.
Perfect with a classic lamb roast and all the trimmings.
