Crafted by the new generation of Peter Lehmann winemakers, The Barossan Grenache pays homage to both the storied landscape of the Barossa Valley and the pioneering spirit of its namesake. The origins of this wine date back to the late 1970s, when Peter Lehmann, faced with a grape surplus crisis that threatened the livelihoods of over a hundred local growers, took a bold stand. Refusing to let his community suffer, he created “The Futures”—a wine made with grapes others rejected, backed by his personal guarantee to pay growers once the wine sold. This legendary act laid the foundation for one of Australia’s most iconic wine brands, built on trust, community, and resilience. Today, Peter Lehmann Wines continues to honour this legacy, working with multi-generational family growers to access the best fruit across Barossa’s famed sub-regions.
Sustainability at Peter Lehmann Wines is deeply rooted in its founding principles—supporting local growers and preserving the integrity of the land. Their long-standing relationships with Barossa’s farming families have led to sustainable vineyard management practices that emphasize soil health, water conservation, and minimal intervention. These efforts ensure the continued vitality of the region for future generations, aligning with the values that Peter himself held dear. The commitment to stewardship goes hand in hand with the winemakers’ respect for the land, creating wines that are both environmentally responsible and true to their terroir.
The Barossan Grenache is a celebration of precision and place, with each parcel of fruit selected from key sub-regions that highlight the diversity and richness of the Barossa. The grapes are vinified with care to retain freshness and varietal expression, showcasing the winemakers’ modern approach while respecting traditional methods. Minimal oak is used to keep the fruit purity front and centre, allowing the Grenache’s natural vibrancy and elegance to shine through. The result is a wine that speaks authentically of its vineyard origins, shaped by both craftsmanship and nature.
In the glass, the wine reveals bright purple hues framed by a garnet red core. The palate is lifted and silky, brimming with juicy notes of raspberry and floral violet, complemented by a whisper of dried sage. This is a beautifully textured Grenache with restrained tannins and an approachable, smooth finish—perfectly embodying the generous style for which Barossa wines are known. Its elegance and aromatics make it an exceptional candidate for enjoying lightly chilled.
This versatile Grenache is a dream at the dinner table. It pairs beautifully with antipasto platters, smoked meats, and dishes that bring a touch of spice—think Szechuan beef, Korean BBQ, or spicy Thai duck salad. The wine’s supple texture and bright acidity cut through richness and elevate bold flavours, making it equally at home with fusion cuisine or a relaxed charcuterie board. And thanks to its finesse, it also shines solo as a vibrant pre-dinner pour.
