Founded by Chris and Andrea Mullineux in 2007, this winery is now one of the most lauded in South Africa.
Named ‘Winery of the Year’ four times by the Platter Guide in 2014, 2016, 2019 and 2020, Mullineux were also Tim Atkin MW’s ‘South African Winemakers of the Year’ in 2016. They chose the town of Riebeek-Kasteel, just west of Malmesbury in the Swartland, for its old vineyards on granite and schist soils, reasoning that, with such quality fruit, they would be able to make outstanding wines. It is an understatement to say they have been proved right
A blend of sustainably-farmed parcels from across the Swartland. Three parcels are planted on the stony shale and schist-based soils of the Kasteelberg, which contribute bold fruit. Two parcels of dry land, bush vines grown in the decomposed Granite of the Paardeberg contribute mineral freshness to the final wine.
This Swartland Syrah has superb complexity, balance and intensity. On the nose is a wonderful bouquet of fresh mulberries, violets and black olive. The structured palate follows through with intricate layers of dark plums, sour cherry and star anise and finishes with powerful and velvety tannins
Mullineux Syrah 2020 is a wine that shines alongside food, with its bold yet elegant structure enhancing a range of dishes. Grilled or roasted meats, such as lamb, venison, or ribeye steak, are ideal partners. The smoky, savory elements of the wine complement these meats, while the acidity cuts through the richness.
For a more adventurous pairing, consider Moroccan lamb tagine with dried fruits and spices, or a slow-cooked beef stew that draws out the wine’s earthy, peppery notes. Vegetarian dishes like mushroom risotto or roasted eggplant parmesan also pair beautifully, highlighting the wine’s savory and umami characteristics. When it comes to cheese, aged varieties like Gouda or sharp cheddar, as well as blue cheese, create a delightful contrast with the wine’s richness.
