Marchesi di Grésy has long been recognised as one of Piemonte’s most esteemed producers. With four distinguished estates across Langhe and Monferrato—regions renowned for producing some of Piemonte’s finest wines—the estate spans 45 hectares of vineyards. Among these, 11 hectares are dedicated to Nebbiolo, used to craft the winery’s flagship Barbarescos: Martinenga Camp Gros and Martinenga Gaiun. The Martinenga vineyard, an awe-inspiring natural amphitheatre surrounding the winery, is regarded as one of Barbaresco’s greatest single vineyards and has been exclusively owned by the di Grésy family since 1797.
Alberto di Grésy, the current owner and manager, took a transformative step in 1973 by shifting from selling grapes to local producers to vinifying his own estate-grown fruit under the di Grésy name. His winemaking philosophy is rooted in tradition while embracing modern technology, ensuring that each wine expresses the unique personality of its terroir and grape variety.
The Merlot grapes used for Marchesi di Grésy Monferrato Rosso come from the Monte Colombo vineyard in Cassine, within the Asti zone. Originally intended for blending with Barbera, the exceptional quality of the fruit led Alberto di Grésy to produce a single-varietal wine instead. The grapes undergo traditional vinification with a 14-day maceration and regular pump-overs, followed by malolactic fermentation in stainless steel. The wine is then aged for 12 months in used French barriques (Allier) and an additional 24 months in large Slavonian oak casks.
The result is a refined and captivating wine that balances richness with elegance. The nose is expressive, revealing layers of aromatic spice, mature forest fruits, and ripe plum and damson. On the palate, it is velvety and opulent, with flavours of ripe plum and sour cherry leading to a long, structured finish supported by well-integrated tannins.
Marchesi di Grésy Monferrato Rosso is a versatile pairing for a range of dishes. It complements a simply cooked steak beautifully and pairs equally well with casseroles and game meats such as duck, rabbit, or lamb. This wine offers endless culinary possibilities, making it a superb choice for those seeking a sophisticated and expressive expression of Piemonte’s winemaking tradition.
