Louis Latour’s Grand Ardèche Chardonnay is a distinguished white wine that exemplifies the winery’s innovative spirit and dedication to quality. In 1979, Maison Louis Latour expanded beyond its Burgundy roots to the Ardèche region, attracted by its favourable climate and clay-limestone soils ideal for cultivating Chardonnay. The consistent sunshine and the drying Mistral wind in this area ensure optimal grape ripening and reduce the risk of rot.
The winemaking process mirrors traditional Burgundian techniques. Fully ripened grapes are carefully selected and lightly pressed. The must is then fermented and aged for approximately 10 months in oak barrels crafted by Louis Latour’s own cooperage in Beaune. This meticulous approach imparts the wine with its characteristic richness and complexity.
In terms of accolades, the Grand Ardèche Chardonnay 2019 received significant recognition at the 2022 Sommeliers Choice Awards. It was honored with a Double Gold Medal, scoring 96 points, and was crowned the White Wine of the Year.
Tasting notes for the Grand Ardèche Chardonnay highlight its aromatic profile, featuring fresh almonds, honey, and acacia. On the palate, it is generous, displaying notes of toasted almonds, complemented by a fresh, slightly saline finish.
The wine pairs exceptionally well with grilled seafood, creamy pasta dishes, roast chicken, and soft cheeses.
