La Crema Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

La Crema was founded in 1979 with a vision to showcase the remarkable potential of California’s cool-climate coastal vineyards. Their passion took root in Sonoma County, particularly the Sonoma Coast, a region they recognised early on for its extraordinary terroir. Over the decades, La Crema has become known for crafting artisanal wines from carefully chosen sites across California and Oregon, always guided by an unwavering commitment to quality and authenticity.

Long before sustainability became fashionable, La Crema embraced environmentally responsible practices out of a deep respect for the land. Their approach to nature-based winegrowing focuses on working with the natural rhythms of each vineyard, encouraging biodiversity and using native organisms to support vine health. Around 60% of their estate vineyard land remains purposefully unplanted, preserving native habitats and strengthening the overall ecosystem.

This Chardonnay is crafted from fruit sourced throughout the Sonoma Coast, where cooling Pacific breezes, fog-laced mornings and well-draining soils create ideal conditions for expressive, finely balanced wines. After harvest, the grapes are gently pressed and settled for 24 hours before being racked to barrel for fermentation. About 15% of the lot undergoes malolactic fermentation, and this portion is then used to top the remainder of the wine after primary fermentation, building nuanced texture. The wine rests on its lees for roughly six months with monthly stirring, enhancing richness and depth.

On the nose, inviting aromas of Meyer lemon, pear and delicate white flowers are lifted by subtle oak. The palate reveals crisp apple, golden peach and pineapple, with a suggestion of graham cracker pie crust adding a thread of indulgent richness. Fleshy and vibrant with concentrated fruit, the wine’s juicy, balanced acidity leads to a long, elegant finish.

A versatile partner at the table, it pairs beautifully with cracked crab, lobster, shrimp and scallops in creamy sauces, or with a simple roast chicken. Butternut squash risotto makes an inspired match, and this Chardonnay even extends gracefully into dessert — try it alongside Key lime pie for an unexpected delight.
