La Crema Russian River Valley Chardonnay

La Crema was founded in 1979 with a vision to showcase the potential of California’s cool-climate coastal vineyards. Their passion took root in Sonoma County, a region they recognised early on for its outstanding terroir. Over the years, La Crema has become known for producing artisanal wines from carefully chosen sites across California and Oregon, always with an uncompromising commitment to quality and craftsmanship. Beyond the wines themselves, the team at La Crema measures success by the enjoyment their bottles bring and the positive impact they have on their communities, continuing to invest in diversity, inclusion, and fostering authentic human connections.

Long before sustainability became a marketing trend, La Crema embraced eco-friendly practices simply because it was the right thing to do. Their approach to nature-based winegrowing respects the land’s natural rhythms, enhancing biodiversity and using native organisms to support vine health and protect local ecosystems. Impressively, around 60% of La Crema’s estate vineyard land is intentionally left unplanted to preserve natural habitats, encouraging a rich biodiversity that benefits both the vineyards and the surrounding environment. They also practise regenerative farming, which helps capture carbon in the soil, improves water retention, and creates healthy conditions for beneficial microorganisms — all ensuring their vineyards flourish in true harmony with nature.

This wine reveals inviting aromas of white peach, lemon zest and green pear, accented by delicate hints of toasted hazelnut and spice. On the palate, bright flavours of apple, lemon curd and pineapple unfold, giving way to deeper notes of vanilla custard. A lively acidity lends balance and energy, driving through to a concentrated, lingering finish.

It pairs beautifully with creamy, decadent dishes such as risotto primavera and brown butter scallops, especially when complemented by a touch of lemon zest or Pecorino. Perhaps surprisingly, it also proves a wonderful match for tricky ingredients like asparagus.

It was awarded 90 points by Tom Capo of Wine Enthusiast Magazine in April 2024.
