Keith Tulloch Shiraz Viognier

Keith Tulloch Wines was founded in 1997 by fourth-generation winemaker Keith Tulloch, who draws on his family’s deep history in viticulture to create wines that are both innovative and true to their origins. The winery focuses on producing wines with a sense of place, using sustainable practices and low-intervention techniques to allow the natural characteristics of the region’s fruit to shine through.

The decision to blend Shiraz with a touch of Viognier is inspired by the traditional co-fermentation style found in France’s Côte-Rôtie region. In this technique, a small percentage of Viognier, a white grape, is blended with Shiraz (also known as Syrah) during fermentation. This method brings a remarkable aromatic lift and texture to the wine, creating a distinctive and elegant expression that has captivated wine enthusiasts worldwide.

The wine pours a deep ruby colour, hinting at the richness and complexity to come. On the nose, it delivers vibrant aromas of blackberries, ripe plums, and dark cherries, complemented by delicate floral notes of violets, a hallmark of the Viognier component. Hints of spice, such as black pepper and cloves, add layers of complexity to the bouquet.

The palate is beautifully balanced and concentrated with notes of dark fruit, pepper, and a touch of earthiness, while the Viognier provides a silky mouthfeel and a hint of stone fruit sweetness. Fine-grained tannins and bright acidity create a structure that is both powerful and approachable. The finish is long and lingering, leaving traces of blackberry, spice, and a delicate floral lift that showcases the artistry of the blend.

Great with food that’s equally rich and smooth yet also offers a gently kick of spice. Try with Chinese spareribs, beef stir fry or barbecued fish.
