Kardos Dry Furmint

Kardos Vineyards is a tiny, family-owned winery nestled in Mád, Tokaj’s most prestigious and historic wine village. The estate’s vineyards have been in the family for centuries, but it was only after the political changes of 1989 that they established the Kardos winery. Since then, especially with the involvement of Gábor Jnr., who left a law career to focus on the land, the winery has undergone a modernisation that includes strict yield control, careful bunch selection, and selective harvesting. These efforts have transformed Kardos into a producer of distinctive, high-quality Tokaji wines, including dry whites and rare Aszú made only in exceptional vintages.

Kardos uses no herbicides and minimal pesticides, with a strong commitment to shifting towards organic viticulture. While not yet officially certified, the estate prioritises environmentally responsible practices to nurture healthy vines and soils.

The Furmint grapes for this wine come from 20-year-old vines grown on volcanic white zeolite soil in the south-facing Arany Sajgó vineyard. Harvested by hand, the grapes are quickly crushed and destemmed before gentle pressing. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks with natural Tokaji yeast, and the wine is aged on lees for three months with weekly battonage, all designed to preserve freshness and enhance texture.

Pale green in colour, the wine opens with fresh grapefruit aromas, followed by flavours of grapefruit, pear, and lime on the palate. It is dry, crisp, and balanced by elegant minerality, finishing with a refreshing bitter edge that lifts the overall profile.

This dry Furmint is perfect as an aperitif or paired with seafood linguine, fresh salads, and cheese plates.
