Founded in 1880, Maison Joseph Drouhin is one of Burgundy’s most respected family-owned wine houses, renowned for producing wines that faithfully express the character of their terroir. Guided by a philosophy of elegance, balance and authenticity, the Drouhin family combines traditional craftsmanship with meticulous vineyard and cellar practices to showcase the individuality of each appellation and vintage.
This Saint-Véran is sourced from vineyards across the appellation’s key communes, including Chânes, Davayé, Leynes, Prissé and Solutré-Pouilly, at the southern end of Burgundy. The Chardonnay vines grow in Jurassic limestone soils, an extension of the famous chalky strata of the Côte d’Or. Following harvest, the grapes are gently pressed before fermentation takes place two-thirds in stainless steel tanks and one-third in 500-litre oak barrels. The wine is then aged on its lees for six to ten months, building texture and complexity while preserving freshness and purity of fruit.
The wine offers inviting aromas of lemon blossom, Mirabelle plum and subtle musky notes. The palate is generous and beautifully rounded, combining ripe citrus and orchard fruit with delicate floral nuances. Fresh and lively, it carries excellent balance and a subtle saline edge on the finish, adding length and refinement.
A versatile food wine, it pairs beautifully with grilled fish, shellfish, roast chicken, creamy pasta dishes and soft-ripened cheeses. Its freshness and texture also make it an excellent match for lighter pork dishes and seasonal vegetable cuisine.
Awarded 90 points by Stuart Pigott for James Suckling, who described it as “very fresh and juicy” with lemon blossom and Mirabelle aromas, finishing with a touch of salinity.
