High in the Elgin Valley at 420 metres above sea level, Iona is a striking estate founded by Andrew Gunn. From this elevated vantage point overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, he cultivates some of the coolest vineyards in the Cape—an increasingly rare and precious resource in South African winemaking.
The cooler climate and long growing season here allow the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, developing deep complexity while retaining freshness and elegance. Farming is rooted in sustainability, using organic and biodynamic principles to care for the land. A resident flock of geese roams freely among the vines, offering natural pest control as part of a thoughtful, low-intervention approach that prioritises soil health and biodiversity.
In the vineyard, grapes are cultivated organically with minimal intervention, and only the best bunches are hand-harvested. Once fermentation is complete, the wine is transferred to French oak barrels—20% new, the remainder seasoned—where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and matures on its lees for 12 months.
This Pinot Noir is delicately perfumed with notes of rose petals, wild strawberries, red and black cherries, and a subtle hint of spice. The palate is finely textured and layered, offering both succulence and structure. Bright acidity and fine, chalky tannins lead to a savoury, lingering finish. Elegant yet powerful, this is a poised and age-worthy expression of classic Pinot Noir.
Perfect alongside rich, savoury dishes—try it with beef bourguignon simmered with mushrooms, or braised lamb shanks served with creamy mash or slow-roasted root vegetables. The wine’s freshness and complexity will elevate the depth and richness of these hearty meals.
