Founded by ex-Ulster rugby players Louis Ludig and Schalk van der Merwe with a vision to create wines that are as bold and unapologetic as their name suggests, Hellbent Wines began as a small-scale winery in a region renowned for its exceptional terroirs. The winery’s journey started with a singular goal: to craft wines that express the raw, unfiltered essence of their surroundings. From the very beginning, the focus was on producing wines that tell a story—wines that speak to the character of the vineyards, the soil, and the people behind them.
The west-facing vineyards are situated on decomposed granite and Table Mountain sandstone soils at an altitude of approximately 224 metres above sea level on the estate. The grapes were hand-harvested in March.
On the nose, rich aromas of ripe red plum, black cherry, cloves, and a subtle hint of sweet tobacco.
The palate reveals a full-bodied wine, offering flavours of plum, toasted coconut, and dark chocolate, supported by a firm tannic structure.
A perfect match for grilled meats, such as barbecued lamb chops or braised short ribs. Its bold flavours also work well with smoky charcuterie and aged cheeses.
