Guelbenzu ‘Vierlas’

Guelbenzu has been producing wine since the mid-19th century, and in 2001 they established a new winery at Vierlas in the Queiles Valley. The estate sits at the meeting point of Navarra, Rioja and Aragon, where the stony soils and high diurnal range offer excellent conditions for quality grape growing. Mount Moncayo and the cooling “cierzo” wind provide protection from excess humidity. Seeking to craft wines true to their unique terroir, Guelbenzu left the Navarra DO and became the driving force behind the creation of the Ribera del Queiles appellation in 2003.

Guelbenzu follow sustainable farming practices, with a focus on biodiversity and minimal intervention. They avoid nitrogen-based fertilisers to protect water sources and use a foliar fertilisation programme to reduce their carbon footprint. Vineyard cover crops improve soil structure and support beneficial insects, while the persistent cierzo wind naturally limits disease pressure. Though not certified organic, their growing conditions allow them to avoid fungicides and other chemical inputs.

This single-vineyard wine is made from 20-year-old Merlot vines grown on the dry, pebbly soils of the Lombana estate. Grapes are fermented in stainless steel over 10–12 days, then aged for 6 months in a mix of French (30%) and American (70%) oak, followed by further ageing in bottle. The result is a structured yet approachable red with a strong sense of place.

Ripe black fruit aromas are layered with savoury hints of tapenade and spice. The palate is full-bodied and textured, with blackberry, liquorice and subtle toasty oak on the finish.

Versatile at the table – pair with roasted vegetable risotto, tomato-based pasta dishes, or lighter white meats.
