Winemakers David Tofterup and Daniel Gimenez team up in Yecla to create Gran Pasas.

Gran Pasas is crafted in south-eastern Spain, where old Monastrell vines thrive in the warm Mediterranean climate. The vineyards, with their rocky, sun-drenched soils and cooling breezes from the nearby sea, create the perfect conditions for low-yielding vines that deliver concentrated, intensely flavoured grapes. Many of these old bush vines are over 30 years old, their deep roots drawing character and minerality from the land.

Harvesting is done by hand once the grapes reach full ripeness, ensuring only the best fruit is selected. A gentle winemaking approach preserves the natural richness of the Monastrell, with careful fermentation and ageing to develop depth and complexity without losing the variety’s signature freshness.

The name “Pasas” — meaning “raisins” in Spanish — nods to the traditional winemaking style where the grapes are left to achieve optimal ripeness, concentrating their sugars and flavours naturally on the vine. The result is a wine that is bold yet beautifully balanced, offering both immediate appeal and the potential to age gracefully over the next few years.

Deep in colour with vibrant purple hues, Gran Pasas Monastrell 2021 offers a beautifully expressive nose of ripe blackberries, plums and a touch of sweet spice. On the palate, the wine is rich and smooth, with layers of juicy dark fruits, hints of chocolate and vanilla, and a supple, velvety texture. The finish is long and warming, with gentle tannins providing structure without overwhelming the fruit’s natural generosity.

Perfectly matched with slow-cooked lamb, grilled red meats, hearty vegetable stews or a rich mushroom risotto.
