Gigino Grande Toscana Rosso IGT

“Gigino” Grande is a Tuscan red produced by Barbanera in memory of Luigi Barbanera. It is a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes.

After the harvest, which takes place around the first week of October, the selected grapes are fermented, with a light drying for about 20 days for the Sangiovese variety. Cold maceration before fermentation helps extract perfumes and aromas, followed by fermentation at 25 °C. The wine is then aged for a year in French and American oak barrels.

It reveals a deep, dense and impenetrable amaranth red colour in the glass. The intensely fruity bouquet offers notes of ripe red fruits, predominantly black cherry and blackcurrant jam, merging into finer and more complex nuances of vanilla and caramel. On the palate, it is strong, structured yet elegant, softened by smooth, well-integrated tannins. The finish is full-bodied and persistent, with clear echoes of dried fruit, bitter chocolate and Arabica coffee.

Excellent with mushroom-based dishes such as risottos and scaloppine, braised meats and game, and long-aged cheeses.

91 points – James Suckling 2025 (Gigino Grande 80th Anniversary 2021)
