The Friedrich Wilhelm Gymnasium estate, with its origins dating back to 1561, is rooted in the history of Trier. Wine production from the estate’s vineyards supported the Jesuit school for centuries. Today, the estate covers 25 hectares on the steep slopes of the Middle Mosel and Saar, all dedicated to Riesling. The cellars are located beneath the city of Trier, with foundations dating back to 1593. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel or traditional Mosel Fuder (1000-litre barrels). Interestingly, one of the estate’s more famous former students is Karl Marx, born in Trier.
The Riesling grapes for this wine are sourced from the steep, slatey soils of the Saar and Mosel regions. After careful picking and selection, the grapes are fermented in a combination of 100-litre oak Fuder and stainless steel. Both components are blended later to create added complexity. The wine then rests on its fine lees before bottling to enhance texture and depth.
This wine offers fragrant aromas of ripe apricot and citrus, with additional ripe stone fruit notes on the palate. A clean, saline minerality and a zesty lemon sherbet character add freshness and complexity. The style is off-dry, with a well-balanced, crisp finish that makes it incredibly appealing.
Perfect for pairing with pasta and bacon dishes, grilled fish, or scallops. The wine’s freshness and minerality make it an excellent match for seafood and light, savoury fare.
