Thorne & Daughters was started in 2013 by John and Tasha Seccombe with the aim of producing authentic wines from the Western Cape. It is widely acknowledged to be one of the forerunners of the ‘New Wave’ wine movement in South Africa. Thorne & Daughters is mainly focused on producing Cape white blends, from 15 different growers in Bot River, Stellenbosch, Voor Paardeberg, Swartland, Citrusdal, Franschhoek and Overberg. Fruit sourcing has relied on a network of close winemaking friends and knocking on doors to gather the various parcels with which they work. John and Tasha did not want to be limited geographically, so the net was cast wide and has been driven by “a happy synergy of people, place, soil and vines”.
The fruit for the ‘Copper Pot’ Pinot Noir is sourced from numerous sites in the Overberg region, most of which are just outside the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge. This area is destined to become a new ward called ‘Shaw’s Mountain’ and the soils here are predominantly clay-shale and quartz-sandstone. These soils, combined with the region’s cooler climate, result in rich yet perfumed Pinot Noir. A small amount of fruit is also sourced from an organically farmed vineyard in the Bottelary Hills near Stellenbosch.
The wine opens with perfumed and elegant aromas of rose, redcurrants and wild herbs on the nose. On the palate, fine-grained tannins and juicy acidity are coupled with well defined notes of nutmeg and red plum.
Thanks to its light body, bright acidity, and delicate tannins, the Copper Pot Pinot Noir 2022 is an incredibly food-friendly wine. It pairs beautifully with a range of dishes, from light salads to richer, more savory meals. Some ideal pairings include roast chicken, duck, pork, grilled salmon, mushroom dishes and soft cheeses
