The Ancient Vines Mourvèdre is crafted from some of the estate’s oldest, most historic, and lowest-yielding vineyards. These vines produce fruit of remarkable concentration, owing to meticulous farming, the distinctive Oakley terroir, and a cooling breeze from the San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers. With naturally low yields of just 2 to 3 tonnes per acre, this wine embodies the pure essence of Mourvèdre. The grapes exhibit deep, dusty dark berry flavours that contribute to the richness of the Ancient Vines Mourvèdre.
Each vineyard lot is harvested separately to ensure optimal ripeness and a balanced acidity. The grapes undergo full de-stemming and gentle crushing, preserving a high proportion of whole berries in the must. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks with carefully selected cultured yeasts, maintained at the ideal temperature for maximum flavour and colour extraction. Once fermentation is complete, the wine is pressed off its skins at dryness before being racked into dark-toasted American oak barrels (approximately 30% new) for gentle ageing over 10 months, followed by a period in neutral cooperage.
Rich and complex, this wine presents flavours of dark plum, cherry liqueur, cola cube, and old-fashioned root beer, which evolve into layered notes of integrated oak and spice. The finish is smooth, juicy, and abundant with ripe cherry fruit, lending the wine a distinctive character and depth.
Perfect with slow-cooked meats, aged cheeses, or earthy mushroom dishes. A bold and versatile wine for rich, flavourful pairings.
