“Creative freedom lies at the core of Montelena. It’s pervasive, ubiquitous, but at the same time, subtle and ostensibly paradoxical to those who don’t know us. At first glance it would seem to conflict with our classic and historic legacy, when in reality, it propels our status year after year and more importantly, inspires us. In no place do we experiencethat more than in our Estate Cabernet.” – Winemaker, Matt Crafton
A blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc
On the nose notes of blueberry, sage, and cedar accentuate the opulence of the vintage, followed by spicy black pepper and dried cherry—a contrast that’s vivid now and will soften over time.
The palate is pure and fresh, leaning toward a cool character with layers of raspberry jam, cocoa, strawberry, and clove. Tannins are persistent and mouthcoating, balancing the sharp acidity that reveals the wine’s stony minerality typical of the Estate.
The finish is polished and long-lasting, the finish transitions from mineral to cassis, then ripe plum with allspice and espresso. Delicate vanilla and mint emerge, creating an extraordinarily complex and delicious experience.
This bold, robust wine pairs well with a variety of rich, flavorful dishes but shines especially alongside beef, lamb, game meats like venison, and aged, firm cheeses.
