Côtes Catalanes, located in the Roussillon region of southern France, near the border with Spain, is a wine-growing area known for its diverse and dramatic landscapes. The vineyards here are influenced by the Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers, mild winters, and a persistent Tramontane wind that sweeps across the region. This wind helps to keep the vineyards dry and free from disease, allowing the grapes to ripen fully while maintaining a healthy balance.
The soils of Côtes Catalanes are equally varied, ranging from schist and granite to clay and limestone, providing a complex foundation that imparts unique mineral qualities to the wines. The rugged terrain, with its steep hillsides and terraced vineyards, forces the vines to dig deep, resulting in grapes with great concentration.
Carignan is a grape variety with a storied past, particularly in the Mediterranean regions of France and Spain. Known for its deep colour, high acidity, and robust tannins, Carignan has often been used as a blending grape to add structure and complexity to wines. However, in recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in single-varietal Carignan wines, particularly from old vines (vieilles vignes) that can produce wines of remarkable depth and character.
Alo Jais Noir Carignan is a wine that immediately captivates with its deep, inky purple colour, indicative of its concentration and intensity. The nose is a complex blend of dark fruits—blackberry, black cherry, and plum—complemented by notes of garrigue (the wild herbs of the Mediterranean), black pepper, and a touch of smokiness.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and structured, with firm tannins that give it a solid backbone. The fruit is rich and layered, with hints of spice, leather, and earth adding complexity. The wine’s acidity is well-balanced, providing freshness and lift, while the finish is long and satisfying, with a distinct minerality that reflects the stony soils of the Côtes Catalanes.
The robust nature of Alo Jais Noir Carignan makes it a perfect match for hearty dishes. It pairs beautifully with grilled meats, such as lamb, beef, or game, where its tannic structure can stand up to the richness of the meat. It also complements slow-cooked stews, braised dishes, and dishes with robust sauces, such as coq au vin or beef bourguignon.
