Frank Phelan Saint-Esteph

Created in 1986, Frank Phélan is the second wine of Château Phélan Ségur, named after the son of founder Bernard Phélan. Produced from a selection of younger vines alongside parcels of mature vineyard fruit, it offers an approachable expression of the estate’s renowned Saint-Estèphe terroir while retaining the elegance, structure and character for which Phélan Ségur is known.

The 2018 vintage benefited from a warm, dry growing season following a wet spring, allowing the clay-gravel soils of Saint-Estèphe to provide vital water reserves throughout the summer. The blend comprises 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. Following temperature-controlled fermentation and an extended maceration to extract colour, flavour and tannin, the wine was aged for 14 months to enhance complexity and balance.

The wine displays a deep purple colour with classic Saint-Estèphe intensity. Aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant and cedar lead into layers of black cherry and sweet spice. Medium-bodied yet densely textured, the palate combines ripe dark fruit with balanced acidity and well-integrated tannins. Structured and layered, it finishes long and persistent with impressive depth and elegance.

An excellent match for roast duck, herb-crusted lamb or grilled beef. It also pairs beautifully with wild mushroom risotto and mature cheeses such as Comté.
