Writers’ Tears is a marriage of inspiration and art, crafted in homage to Ireland’s golden era of whiskey and creativity. This was a time when copper pot stills produced some of the finest expressions in the world, and when Ireland’s literary giants – from Oscar Wilde to W.B. Yeats – shaped culture and imagination. The whiskey of choice for many was a masterful blend of pot still and malt whiskeys, prized for its full-bodied flavour, creamy texture, and the convivial spirit it inspired. Legend has it that such was their fondness for this style, that when they cried, their tears were of whiskey – giving this expression its evocative name.
Walsh Whiskey’s Writers’ Tears revives this fabled 19th-century recipe with award-winning precision, honouring the deep bond between scribe and spirit. Triple-distilled and meticulously crafted, it brings together the richness of history with the vibrancy of modern Irish distilling. Each bottle is an invitation to savour the flavour that once fuelled great minds – best enjoyed with a dash of inspiration and a thirst for curiosity.
Writers’ Tears Double Oak is an exclusive creation using two woods and two styles of premium Irish whiskey. A blend of Single Pot Still and Single Malt, it is aged in American Oak Bourbon barrels from Kentucky and French Oak Cognac casks from the Cognac region of France. This collaboration between the Walsh family in County Carlow and the Legaret family in Cognac delivers a complex, layered character. Triple-distilled, non-chill filtered and bottled at 46% ABV, it is a whiskey of elegance and depth.
On the nose, sweet vanilla is laced with cinnamon, plum and poached pear. The palate brings vibrant citrus zest, chocolate undertones and a lingering spice, while the finish is decadent, elegant, and one to savour.
