Nicosia’s vineyards are located on the northeastern slopes of Mount Etna, where the high altitudes and volcanic soils create an ideal environment for growing Nerello Mascalese. The vines are planted at elevations ranging from 400 to 900 meters above sea level, benefiting from cooler temperatures and a significant diurnal temperature variation that helps to preserve the grapes’ acidity and aromatic complexity.
The volcanic soils of Etna are rich in minerals and well-drained, forcing the vines to dig deep for water and nutrients. This struggle results in grapes with concentrated flavours and a distinct minerality that is characteristic of Etna wines. The Mediterranean climate, with its hot, dry summers and mild winters, further contributes to the grapes’ ripeness and balance, producing wines with both power and finesse.
Nerello Mascalese is one of Sicily’s most celebrated red grape varieties, known for producing wines with elegance, complexity, and a strong sense of place. Often compared to Pinot Noir for its light colour and aromatic profile. Nerello Mascalese is a versatile grape that can produce wines ranging from delicate and ethereal to bold and robust.
On the nose, the wine is aromatic and expressive, offering a bouquet of red fruits such as cherry, raspberry, and pomegranate, complemented by floral notes of rose and violet. As the wine opens up, more complex aromas emerge, including hints of black tea, tobacco, and earthy undertones that speak to its volcanic origin.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied with a silky texture and fine-grained tannins. The bright acidity provides a refreshing backbone that balances the wine’s rich fruit flavours. The palate reveals layers of red berries, liquorice, and subtle spice, with a mineral edge that adds depth and a long, satisfying finish.
Perfect with charcuterie, aged cheeses, and roasted vegetables, for a more refined pairing, consider serving it with lamb chops, duck breast, or even a hearty seafood stew. The wine’s bright acidity also makes it a great partner for tomato-based dishes.
